Out with the old and in with the new

Healing and Purification Sweat Lodge North Saanich BC

Now that we’re well into the new year, it’s time to get down to business. On Sunday, February 4th I entered a sweat lodge for the first time and what a way to start the Chinese Brown Earth Dog New Year! Dog’s auspicious gifts are unconditional love and loyalty to all living things. According to the “solar” calendar, February 4, 2018, marks the beginning of a Chinese New Year and also is the season of spring (Li Chun). However, Chinese cultures all over the world will follow the lunar calendar and celebrate Chinese New Year on February 16, 2018. Participating in the sweat lodge ceremony was a great way to connect with Mother Earth. Everyone was in their bare feet which allowed for physical contact with the Mother Earth and we also sat on the ground inside the lodge. We were blessed with a beautiful mild day with no rain and it was so easy to enjoy the warmth of the participants and the fire.The ladies entered the sweat lodge first and sat to the right of the elder and the men followed and sat on the opposite side. Once inside the sweat lodge, the elder “White Bear” opened the ceremony by taking offerings of tobacco and prayers for the ancestors. The ceremonial pipe was passed around to all the participants to touch their heads and hearts and to cleanse any area of the body or etheric body with the smoke. Bear grease was rubbed on areas of the body that needed healing and medicine were inhaled to release any sickness from the body. The ancestors were invited in the form of heated rocks and prayers were chanted and sacred songs were sung as water was being poured over the rocks (ancestors). The steam from the heated rocks represented the breath of the ancestors and this continued for about four hours. I entered a state of tranquility and remained in that state for the remainder of the day. When asked about my experience, I had no words to describe the love and appreciation that I felt. Almost all the participants reported experiencing some healing and/or purification effects. The next sweat lodge ceremony will be on February 18, 2018. In the meanwhile, stay grounded.

Number 8 Bone Marrow Washing Exercise

Once you have located Fengchi, use the index, middle and ring fingers of each hand to massage towards each other 36 times in a circular motion. Breathe in on the top half of the circle and exhale on the bottom half of the circle. Don’t rush as this slow, meditative exercise is meant to be coordinated with your breathing. After the 36th repetition is finished, practice a rest period before you begin the next bone marrow washing exercise.

G.B.-20 Wind Pool FENGCHI – Acupuncture Points ) At the lower border of the occipital bone, in the depression between the origins of the sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles.
How to find
Patient’s position: Prone, sitting or supine (supported by a pillow, so that the occipital region is accessible). Starting at the midline, glide with the palpating finger along the lower border of the occiput, crossing the bulge of the origin of the trapezius muscle until you reach a depression the size of a finger pad.
Locate G.B.-20 in its center. Located on the same level is ➞Du-16. ➞BL-10 is located more medially and inferiorly. Actions/Indications

Rooting Our Qi is Easier in Winter Time

I always schedule my Internal Chi Breathing and Bone Rooting workshop in winter. It is easier to teach it during a season (fall-winter transition) when the Qi of the larger field is flowing downward into the earth. Nature’s Qi is “rooting itself” (in the northern hemisphere) to gather strength for the next cycle of yang expansion in the spring and summer. Winter is governed by the water element, which naturally flows downhill and soaks within. So our human Qi follows the flow of water this time of the year.

 I devote winter to teaching the three basic types of breathing: naturalreverse, and counter-force breathing. Breathing opens the “root” of the body, which is the lower dan tian (lit.” elixir field”), a.k.a. the belly center. I’ve found that when you are grounded in your breathing, then your emotional and mental bodies quickly get more grounded.

A strong “belly-root” creates a feeling of calmness and peace, even when things are chaotic around you. We will practice Ocean, Sky, & Great Heart Breathing,  to speed up the rooting process. This shifts your breathing focus from gasping at outer air to breathing more internally, through chi channels in different layers of the body. This form, nicknamed “Blissful Breathing Qigong”, is the best “quick-energizer” qigong that I teach.

              How Bone Breathing Pushes Sick Energy Out of Bone Marrow

In the second part of this workshop, I work on opening up the bones in our body, using bone breathing, bone beating, bone compression, and bone spiraling. These are all part of the Iron Shirt method that I learned from Mantak Chia and Minke de Vos. These exercises deepen the breathing power of our bones and help to both prevent and heal chronic illness. Often, chronic illness is simply “sick chi” that is stored in our bone marrow.

When we breathe it out, the sickness goes away. What appeared to be a terminal illness, gradually becomes forgotten. This is why qigong has such a good reputation (based on a solid track record) of healing chronic illness in China. This reputation is well documented scientifically.

In the Breathing and Rooting course, I describe the two different kinds of grounding that people commonly need, both of which are quite different. One is grounding into the physical earth below our feet, and correspondingly, into the physical tissue of our body. The second is energetic grounding into your meridians and the core channels that define your Energy Body. The Great Spirit has given humans the ability to create new life inside ourselves.  This winter, rejuvenate the body and nourish the soul with Bone Marrow Washing Qigong. The Four Rules Of Living According To Lao Tzu
